Salt Spray Testing

Our Salt Spray Testing chamber introduces a consistent saline fog environment to specimens, such as metal fittings, circuit boards and protective coatings, to assess their corrosion resistance. The salt spray test is particularly important for assemblies that are destined for coastal or maritime applications, but also for the automotive and military sectors where occasional exposure to salt environment is likely.

Salt Spray TestingSalt Spray Testing is usually carried out to the internationally recognised ASTM B117 standard, with typical durations of 2 – 4 weeks. The salt spray test samples are checked daily and first signs of corrosion are noted. The client then has the option of either concluding the test there and then, or seeing the salt spray test through to see if or how the corrosion spreads.

The salt spray test can also be used as part of a more complex environmental testing programme. For example, some of our customers from the automotive industry have requested alternating salt fog with periods of humidity and temperature cycles.

With our Optical Microscopy facilities we can image samples before and after exposure at various levels of detail.

ITA Labs’ UK laboratory service is extremely experienced at providing salt spray test results, with a fast turnaround, at very competitive rates.
